Fr. Peter Mitchell and I explored the city of Moscow during the week after our Easter, which was Holy Week for the Orthodox Church.
(43K) 672 x 450 | Here we are in Moscow. Notice St. Basil's Cathedral in the background on the left. |
(53K) 450 x 672 | The Church of St. Barbara (or St. Maxim) near the English Court - the English had free trade with Russia from 1153-1649. |
(52K) 450 x 672 | St. George, in Kitay-Gorod, erected by Merchants in 1657. |
(34K) 450 x 672 | The lofty sky-blue belltower was added in the 19th century. |
(39K) 672 x 450 | Here we are at Red Square. The historic marketplace, political and religious center of Moscow since the 15th century. (Thus the 'red' has nothing to do with communism.) |
(23K) 672 x 450 | The Kremlin wall is 19 meters high, 6.5 thick and the St. Nicholas tower here is 70 meters high (if you count the 1.5 ton red star on top.) |
(45K) 672 x 450 | Red square, with the historical museum on the far side. |
(51K) 672 x 450 | Kazan Cathedral on the corner of red square, built in 1636, destroyed by Stalin in the 1930s, and now rebuilt in 1993. |
(51K) 450 x 672 | The Resurrection gate, a 1990s replica of the 16th century gate which was pulled down by Stalin in 1931. |
(47K) 672 x 450 | The eternal flame - World War II memorial. |
(53K) 672 x 450 | The Novodevichiy Convent, shut down in 1922 and turned into a museum, which probably spared its destruction. The gate Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1689, and the Cathedral (from 1525) was given the massive domes in the 17th century. |
(55K) 450 x 672 | The Donskoy Monastery, with the Great Cathedral of the Mother of God was built in 1684-1698 - one of the largest structures of its time. |
(71K) 450 x 672 | The incredibly ornate iconstasis. |
(73K) 672 x 450 | Closer view of part of the iconostasis. |
(74K) 450 x 672 | Fr. Mitchell prays before the icon of Our Lady. |
(36K) 672 x 450 | The Danislov monastery, official residence of the Russian Orthodox Patriarch, Alexei II - no proselytizing allowed! Trinity Cathedral on the left and the Church of the Resurrection in the background. |
(36K) 450 x 672 | 17th century Cathedral of the Holy Fathers in the monastery. |
(38K) 450 x 672 | Gate church of St. Simeon the Stylite, which had to be rebuilt after being torn down in the 1920s and its bells sold to Harvard university. |
(45K) 672 x 450 | Massive Cathedral of Christ the Savior is now a new addition to the Moscow skyline. Destroyed by Stalin in 1933 and rebuilt in 1997. |
(47K) 450 x 672 | A nice crucifixion scene in the lower part of the church (fuzzy). |
