Some main sites of the city of Krakow
The Main Market Square of Krakow is the largest in central Europe (200 x 200 meters). Very historic for its ceremonies, parades, meetings and trade. |
The Cloth Hall, the city's main center of trade, it was (and still is) surrounded by numerous market stalls selling just about everything. |
The Town Hall tower, which is all that remains of the 14th century town hall. |
The Church of St. Marys, which dominates the city, one of the oldest Churches, it even surpasses the cathedral. |
High altar of St. Marys, a massive 15th century wood carving of huge proportions. The main scene is the Dormition of the Virgin, as the figures of the apostles support the fainting Mary. |
The central nave is 28 meters high, with a giant crucifix of 1520 high above. |
St. Florian's Gate, the official entrance to the city through which royalty would enter (and invaders). The tower was constructed in 1300, from which a heavy gate was lowered to protect the city. |
Outside the gate, the Barbican fortress, built to defend the St. Florian Gate, it was virtually impregnable to enemy attack. The rest of the city walls and moat have been replaced by parks since 1810. |
The Czartoryski Museum, the oldest in Poland, while not especially impressive, is famous for this painting of Leonardo da Vinci, "Lady with an Ermine". One of only 3 Da Vinci oil paintings in the world. |
The denial of St. Peter. |
Three philosophers in discussion. |
When approached from the other side, this God looks pretty harmless, playing his flute, but then one notices that his other hand is drawing a sword... |
