Just a few of the many churches in Krakow, Poland
The Skalka Church ("the Rock"), Krakow's Oldest Shrine, honored as the place where St. Stanislaw, Bishop of Krakow, was executed by King Boleslaw the Bold in 1079. |
Originally a Romanesque rotunda, the twin tower Gothic church was built in the 13th century, with a large staircase added in 1749 and a crypt in 1880. |
St. Stanislaw was canonized in 1253, and is buried in the Wawel cathedral. The Baroque interior dates from the mid 18th century. |
There is a large yard surrounding the Church, where Pope John Paul II has met with youth on each of his trips to Poland. Beyond is the nearby Church of St. Catherine. |
When St. Stanislaw was decapitated by the King, his body was throne into a pool outside. This pool ("the Stoup of Poland") was constructed in his memory, with his statue surrounded by water (except the pool was empty when I visited). |
The Bernardine Church and Monastery (followers of the renowned Italian preacher, St. John of Capistrano). Rebuilt in 1670s, notice its resemblance to Sts. Peter and Paul below. |
Interior and high altar of the Church. |
The Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, completed by the Jesuits in 1619, a good example of early baroque architecture (modeled after their church in Rome - the Gesu). |
The 13th century Franciscan Church, altered in the 15th century and given a neo-Gothic interior from 1850-1912. |
The new interior stained glass and murals have a combination of floral motifs, geometric patterns and religious scenes. |
There was a vocal concert being given by students from a U.S. high school. |
The Dominican Church, here since 1222, the current church dates from the 15th century. I stayed in the Dominican priory and cloisters attached to the left. |
The massive great hallway of the priory, it stretched on with countless door and side hallways. |
The tomb of St. Hyacinth, the first abbot of the monastery, built in 1581. |
The high altar, largely rebuilt after the great fire of 1850, featuring the Holy Trinity and many saints. |
Interior of the Church, the slender Gothic body of the Church has numerous beautiful side chapels. |
