Arriving at Glendalough |
Glendalough is (was) a monastery founded by St Kevin, a hermit monk who died about 618. |
An impressive, graceful round tower. |
Today there are mostly just ruins of several early churches. |
As you have seen, Glendalough is in a spectacular natural setting. |
St. Helen's Bay Golf Course |
A beautiful day on a scenic course - here I am on hole 17th. |
Fr MacLean on the signature 18th hole. |
A new sport for us: Lawn Bowling |
Basically a combination of Bacci Ball and Shuffleboard. |
Only by rolling the balls on a huge grass court. |
Arriving at Hook Peninsula. |
Hook Head Lighthouse | |
Interior of the lighthouse, built in early 13th century, it is one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world. |
Views from the Lighthouse, which according to legend dates back to a 6th century monk. |
If you notice a large boulder on top of the far rock, they said it was thrown up by a powerful storm.
Here you can see the landscape of the peninsula, with water on both sides. |
Ballyhack Castle |
Built by 15th Century crusaders, the Knights Hospitalers of St John. |
Fr. MacLean in the chapel of the tower. |
The tower has a copmmanding view of the Waterford Estuary. |

A full-scale reconstruction of a 19th century famine ship. |
An entire family and all their belongings have to fit in one bunk. |
Storage belowdecks. |
The first class cabins and captain's room. |
Since New Ross is the birthplace of the family of former American President Jonh F Kennedy. |
So the Irish-Americans decided to dedicate an Arboretum. |

A nice rainbow while leaving the Kennedy Arboretum. |
St Mary Island |
St Mary's was an ancient place of pilgrimage. |
But in October 1649, Cromwell attacked, killed the priests, and the Church has been destroyed since then. |
The "Island" is actually a peninsula in the midst of a salt-water lake.
The moden parish of St Mary |
A view of St Mary Island from the Church. |
A crucifix that a young man tried to save from the Church, but alas was shot down by the brutal soldiers. The crucifix was found in the lake in 1887. |
We bicycled down to Kilmore Quay, just a few kilometers south of where we stayed. |
The local parish of St Mary in Kilmore.
We said Mass here each day. |
One is welcomed to the town of Kilmore by a nice grotto of Lourdes. |

The Keating farmhouse where we stayed in Kilmore.
An old barn on the farmhouse, with our rental car. |
