Sunday, March 7, 2004 a group of us went to visit the Papal Summer residence at Castelgandolfo.
The Papal Villa at Castelgandolfo is used as a summer home by the Popes. |
Next to Lake Albano, it is much more peaceful and cooler than the city. |
Here we enter into the residence of Bishop Harvey, the papal secretary. |
Bishop Harvey explains the history. The picture is of the Road to Emmaus. |
On top of the villa is the Papal Observatory. |
The main audience hall where the pope receives groups. |
Fr. Jerry Baker next to the papal chair. |
A smaller meeting room with papal chair next to a statue of St. Peter which dates from the 4th century St. Peter's Basilica of Constantine. |
This particular throne is no longer used - as its 500 years old. |
The chapel |
Since it was raining, I don't have a picture of the villa from the outside, so this painting of it will have to do. |
The Villa at Castelgandolfo was built by Pope Urban VIII (1623-44). |
Bishop Bruskewitz and Msgr. Conley enjoy the view. |
Msgr. Fucinaro shows the sights. |
The papal bed used by John XXIII and Paul VI. |
After the property was returned to the Holy See with the Lateran Accords of 1926, Pope Pius XI who began the work of restoration. (The inscription reads the 12th year of his pontificate = 1934.) |
A more modern bronze statue of St. Peter outside. |
Some of the incredible papal gardens surrounding the villa. |
An ancient underground cavern in the gardens. |
