Welcome to Toledo |
Santa Leocaida is one of the patrons of Toledo, a virgin martyr thought to have died on Dec. 9, 304 in the Diocletian persecution. |
There is no doubt of the historical fact of her martyrdom, just a question if that was the exact date. |
Since very early times there was a church dedicated to Saint Leocadia at Toledo. |
Although a young girl, Leocadia was seized and cruelly tortured in order to make her apostatize, but she remained steadfast in her faith. |
She was sent back to prison, where she died from the effects of the torture. Thus she is represented with a tower, to signify that she died in prison. |

Convento Santo Domingo el Antiguo, a Dominican convent that is now largely converted to a museum. |
The 16th-century Santo Domingo contains the earliest of El Greco's Toledo paintings. |
El Greco arrived in Toledo July 1577 and by Sept. 1578 had completed nine paintings for Santo Domingo. |
