Here we are at Red Square. The historic marketplace, political and religious center of Moscow since the 15th century. (Thus the 'red' has nothing to do with communism.)

The Kremlin wall is 19 meters high, 6.5 thick and the St. Nicholas tower here is 70 meters high (if you count the 1.5 ton red star on top.)

The Novodevichiy Convent, shut down in 1922 and turned into a museum, which probably spared its destruction. The gate Church of the Transfiguration was built in 1689, and the Cathedral (from 1525) was given the massive domes in the 17th century.

The Donskoy Monastery, with the Great Cathedral of the Mother of God was built in 1684-1698 - one of the largest structures of its time.

Massive Cathedral of Christ the Savior is now a new addition to the Moscow skyline. Destroyed by Stalin in 1933 and rebuilt in 1997.
