  • In the town of Nazareth, Gabriel greets Mary: “Hail full of grace...”
  • He tells her she is to bear a son and name him Jesus.
  • Mary agrees, and the Word becomes flesh.

Second Joyful Mystery:
The Visitation
  • Luke 1:39-58
  • After the annunciation, Mary immediately sets out to visit her cousin Elizabeth in the Hill County of Judea.
  • Elizabeth greets her, calling her "blessed among women," and Mary replies with the Magnificat.  She stays three months, and then returns home.

Nativity: Birth of Jesus
  • Luke 2:1-20; Mt. 2:1-12
  • Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem for the census.
  • There, Mary gives birth to Our Lord and lays him in a manger for there is no room at the inn.
  • The shepherds and magi come to pay homage to their Savior.

Presentation in the Temple
  • Luke 2:22-39
  • Mary and Joseph present Jesus in the temple in Jerusalem as the Law prescribes.
  • Simeon cries out for joy at seeing the Savior and predicts Mary's sorrow.
  • Anna, too, rejoices at seeing Jesus.

Finding in the Temple
  • Luke 2:41-52
  • Returning from the Passover feast in Jerusalem, Mary and Joseph discover Jesus has stayed behind.
  • After three days of searching they find Jesus among the teachers in the temple, His Father’s house.

The Luminous Mysteries
  • The 1st Luminous Mystery:
  • The Baptism of Our Lord
  • Mt 3:13-17; Mk 1:9-11; Lk 3:21-22
  • Jesus comes to John the Baptist, who is baptizing in the Jordan River.
  • After Jesus was baptized, the Spirit of God descended like a dove and the voice of the Father spoke: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

The Wedding of Cana
  • John 2:1-11
  • When the wine ran short at the wedding feast, Jesus mother asks him help.
  • Jesus works his first miracle, changing water into wine - and opens the hearts of the disciples to faith.

The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God
  • Matt 4:12, Mark 1:14-15; Luke 3:20
  • Jesus spent three years preaching in the area of Galilee.
  • His primary message is about the Kingdom of God and the call for conversion.

  • Jesus took Peter, James and John up the Mountain to pray.
  • He is transfigure before them, his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white.

Institution of the Eucharist
  • Matt 26:26-28, Mark 14:22-24; Luke 22:19-20; 1 Cor 11:23-25
  • Jesus gathered with his Apostles in the Cenacle to celebrate the Passover.
  • At this Last Supper, he says “This is my body… This is the cup of my blood… Do this in memory of me.”

  • The 1st Sorrowful Mystery:
  • The Agony in the Garden
  • Mt 26:36-46; Mk 14:32-42; Lk 22:39-46
  • Jesus goes with the apostles to Gethsemane.  He prays to the Father but the apostles fall asleep.
  • After several hours of agonizing prayers, Jesus is handed over to his enemies.

  • Mt 27:15-26; Mk 15:6-15; Jn 18:38-19:1
  • Pilate, to placate the crowd, hands Jesus over to be scourged.
  • The soldiers take turns furiously beating Our Lord.
  • His flesh is mercilessly torn from head to toe, front and back.

  • Mt 27:27-31; Mk 15:16-20; Jn 19:2-5
  • After being scourged Jesus is clothed in purple, crowned with thorns, and is mocked as “King of the Jews.”
  • Jesus, bruised and insulted, is presented by Pilate to the people: “Behold the Man.”

Fourth Sorrowful Mystery
Carrying of the Cross
  • Mt 27:32-34; Mk 15:21-23; Lk 23:26-31; Jn 19:5-17
  • Jesus is condemned to death and is led out to carry his cross to Calvary.
  • Known as the “Via Dolorosa”, or “Way of Sorrows”.
  • Traditionally 14 “Stations” recall the events of the Way of the Cross.

Fifth Sorrowful Mystery
The Crucifixion
  • Mt. 27:33-54; Mk. 15:22-39; Lk. 23:32- 49; Jn. 19:18-30
  • Arriving at the hill of Golgotha, or “Place of the Skull”, Jesus is crucified.
  • After several hours of jeering abuse and excruciating pain, Jesus dies.

  • The Holy Spirit comes upon them with a mighty wind and tongues of fire.
  • The speak many languages and many are converted – the Church is born.

The Assumption of Our Lady
  • Genesis 3:15; Luke 1:46-55
  • Mary, the mother of Jesus was free “full of grace” from all sin.
  • At the end of her life on earth, Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven.
  • Thus Mary was saved by Jesus from the corruption of both sin and death.

The Coronation of Our Lady
  • John 19:26-27; Revelation 12:1
  • Mary, the mother of Jesus, is also given by Jesus as the mother of all disciples.
  • Assumed into heaven, Mary is honored as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
  • As the book of Revelation describes: “A woman clothed with the sun... with a crown of twelve stars.”
